From Broken Resolutions to Blissful Beginnings: A New Way to Welcome the Year
As 2024 winds down to its final few days and 2025 is queuing up, many of us are turning to our New Year’s Resolutions. You know how it goes; we all have the list, lose weight, exercise more, stop drinking, stop smoking, eat healthy, etc. and so on. We all start out with the best intentions and yet we don’t follow through or follow through briefly. By the time February rolls around those resolutions are long forgotten or worse, making us feel like losers because we couldn’t stick with them. In fact, we are so bad at resolutions that there is a name for the day in January when 85% of people give up - Quitters Day.
I was pondering all this as I sat down for my morning meditation and a question arose: What if there was a higher vibration way to approach resolutions? A way that aligned us with our Soul and Source. So my friends, I meditated on that, which did indeed give me an answer.
This year I’m not doing resolutions, instead I am creating a Bliss List (I love a good alliteration 🤓) or Joy List if you prefer. The things on my Bliss List will be the things that make my Soul sing or really raise my vibration. The thinking is that if I have a list of things that benefit my spirit I will look forward to doing them. They will no longer be things I should do or shouldn’t do. There will be no feeling bad about myself if I don’t succeed. The list will be the reminder to practice self-care, stay grounded and put my oxygen mask on before attempting to help others.
This feels so much better and I am excited to make my list and put it into action. Below is the start to give you an idea and visual.
My Bliss List 2025
Experience more sunrises and sunsets, noticing the amazing display nature puts on every day.
Take the stairs whenever possible, not because I should exercise more (I definitely should) but because the extra few minutes gives me the opportunity to check in with myself and recenter.
Let those I care about know how important they are and how grateful I am they are in my life.
Laugh. Laugh at myself, laugh at a good joke or even a bad one, laugh because it feel good and I forget to lighten up.
Appreciate the excitement my dog has every time we go for a walk, take a trip in the car, or as I prepare his meals. It amazes me that after all these years these things still make him lose his mind with joy.
Learn something new. Learning for learning’s sake still fills me with joy.
As you can see this is a very different list than a traditional resolutions list. But for those of you not ready to depart that much from tradition I have another idea.
Rather than resolutions which start from the standpoint of deficit or flaw, try instead to start with an intention. Intention is a higher vibration and leaves some room for happy accidents or even greater outcomes.
Let me give you a couple examples:
Resolution: lose 10 pounds
Rewritten as Intention: I will check in with my body each meal to see what it needs and honor the information it provides.
Or
Resolution: Get a new job by March
Rewritten as Intention: I intend to spend some time thinking about & listing all the things in my job that I enjoy. Once I am clear about that I will look for opportunities that are more in alignment with those tasks.
You get the idea. Spend some time with the idea of turning the tradition of New Year’s Resolutions into something that sparks joy, and excitement in you. Find a way to start 2025 in a higher vibration for you. Rethink why and what purpose those old resolutions served and then make it your own. Meaningful and special for you. That honors you, all of you, the beautiful, wonderful body, mind and soul that you are.
